A pub quiz is a quiz held in a public house. It is a largely British phenomenon, which reached its peak in the early 1990s. Pub quizzes are still extremely popular and may attract people to a pub who are not found there on other days. The pub quiz is a modern example of a pub game. Though different pub quizzes can cover a range of formats and topics, they have many features in common.

There may be between one and more than half a dozen rounds of questions, totalling anything from 10 to upwards of 80 questions. Rounds may include the following kinds (most common first):
Factual rounds - these are usually spoken, either over a public address system or just called out. Common topics include:
General knowledge - covering the topics listed below (if they're not a separate round) and also topics such as history, geography and science and nature. There may well be more than one of these rounds.
Sport - comprising the statistics and minutiae of popular, well-known sports and general facts about others.
Entertainment - movies, TV shows and music (see also below).
Picture round - these use photocopied or computer-printed hand-outs and consist of pictures to be identified, such as photos of famous people (possibly snapped out of context, or else partially obscured) or logos of companies (without tell-tale lettering), famous places or objects pictured from a strange angle.
Who Am I? - A series of clues to the identity of a famous person (or thing). Clues are given in order of desceding difficulty. The earlier a team can identify the correct answer, the more points they are awarded.
Music round - these consist of excerpts (often only the intro or other non-vocal segment) of songs played over the PA system. Usually the teams must identify the song and also the singer or band (sometimes the year the song was released is also required). Variations include the inclusion of film soundtracks and TV theme tunes (requiring the title), and/or classical music (also requiring the composer).
Puzzle rounds - generally on a hand-out sheet. These may consist of crossword puzzles, anagrams and basic math problems.
True or False - questions to which the answer is True or False.
Novelty rounds - themed round a specific word or name (e.g. all the questions relate to a famous Norman); 'connections', where the last answer in the round provides a link to all the previous answers; true or false; and various others to break up the general stream of questions.

New Video tasks. As we learnt, it´s quite simple to become a film director. Once you recorded your own videos, now you can play with the Web 2.0 tools to create a short scene in just 10 minutes. Just drag your favourites, add some music or effects and obviously, the subtitles with lots of imagination. Great fun. But be careful as you can have problems if you embed it in your blogs. 1. Every student at the school can take part , either individually or as part of a group or team.

2. The competition consists of making a short film ( of 3 - 5 minutes ) in English.

3. The films can be : interviews , scenes from plays, parodies of adverts, songs…

4. The films must be handed over in CD format to your English teacher.

5. Prizes of up to 40 € will be given to the best films . The prizes will be vouchers which can be used in shops .

6. The films will be judged by the entire English department.

7. Whether it wins a prize or not, every film will be considered a piece of voluntary extracurricular work and may positively influence the end of the year English mark.

Our expression today is Santa Claus. Santa Claus is someone who will remain in the hearts of children forever. He is the make-believe person who brings toys and other gifts to children at Christmas.
To grown-ups, he is a special symbol of goodwill and selfless giving. Santa Claus also has some other names: Saint Nicholas, St. Nick, Kris Kringle, Pelznickel.
Two of his names -- Santa Claus and Saint Nicholas -- both come from the Dutch who settled in New York long ago. The Dutch believed Saint Nikolas gave gifts to children. They honored this kindly saint with a yearly festival on December sixth.
The English-speaking people who lived nearby greatly enjoyed Dutch festivals. And they brought the saint and the custom of giving gifts into their own celebration at Christmas time. The Dutch spoke the name "Saint Nikolaas" very fast. It sounded like "sinterklaas." And so, when the English said this word, it sounded like Santa Claus.
West of New York, in Pennsylvania, many German farmers had also heard of Saint Nikolas. But they called him Pelznickel. This word came from "pelz," meaning fur, and "nickel" for Nicholas. And so, to the Germans of Pennsylvania, Saint Nicholas or Pelznickel was a man dressed in fur who came once a year with gifts for good children.
Soon, people began to feel that the love and kindness Pelznickel brought should be part of a celebration honoring the Christkindl, as the Germans called the Christ child. After a time, this became Kris Kringle. Later, Kris Kringle became another name for Santa Claus himself.
Whatever he is called, he is still the same short, fat, jolly old man with a long beard, wearing a red suit with white fur.
The picture of Santa Claus as we see him came from Thomas Nast. He was an American painter born in Bavaria. He painted pictures for Christmas poems. Someone asked him to paint a picture of Santa Claus. Nast remembered when he was a little boy in southern Germany. Every Christmas, a fat old man gave toys and cakes to the children. So, when Nast painted the picture, his Santa Claus looked like the kindly old man of his childhood.
And through the years, Nast's painting has remained as the most popular picture of Santa Claus.
Santa can be seen almost everywhere in large American cities during the Christmas season. Some stand on street corners asking for money to buy food and gifts for the needy. Others are found in stores and shopping centers. It is easy to find them by the long lines of children waiting to tell Santa what they want for Chirstmas. If one took a vote among children to learn who their favorite person was, there is no question who would win -- Santa Claus.

The United States presidential election of 2008, scheduled for Tuesday November 4, 2008, will be the 56th consecutive quadrennial United States presidential election and will select the President and the Vice President of the United States.

The Republican Party has chosen John McCain, the senior United States Senator from Arizona as its nominee; the Democratic Party has chosen Barack Obama, the junior United States Senator from Illinois, as its nominee. The Libertarian Party has nominated former Congressman Bob Barr, the Constitution Party has nominated pastor and radio talk show host Chuck Baldwin, and the Green Party has nominated former Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney. Ralph Nader declined to seek the Green Party nomination and is running as an independent candidate.

The 2008 election is particularly notable because it is the first time in U.S. history that two sitting senators will run against each other for president, and because it is the first time an African American is a presidential nominee for a major party, as well as the first time both major candidates were born outside the continental United States—Hawaii for Obama and the Panama Canal Zone for McCain. Since the Republican nominee for vice-president is a woman, the eventual winning ticket is very likely to be historic, as neither an African American nor a female has achieved either office. Also, the Republican presidential candidate, John McCain, would be the oldest first-term president and the Democratic nominee for vice-president, Joe Biden, would be the first Roman Catholic vice president.

The election will coincide with the 2008 Senate elections in thirty-three states, House of Representatives elections in all states, and gubernatorial elections in eleven states, as well as various state referenda and local elections. As in the 2004 presidential election, the allocation of electoral votes to each state will be based partly on the 2000 Census. The president-elect and vice president-elect are scheduled to be inaugurated on January 20, 2009.

History of Halloween...

Halloween, or All Hallows’ Eve, started centuries ago in this country with the pagan festival of Samhain. Samhain celebrated the end of autumn and the beginning of winter. It was also the day on which they commemorated their dead ancestors and the idea that ghosts, goblins and witches run about on this night grew out of this custom.
Halloween has changed a great deal over the years with different cultures adding to the customs and traditions. The Romans, who lived in Britain for some time added ideas from their Feralia and Poloma festivals into the Celtic traditions.
Later, around the eighth century, the Christian church made November 1 All Saints' Day to honour all the saints that didn't have a special day of their own. As Halloween was a pagan festival and they did not approve of it they made all Hallows Eve part of the celebration for the saints.
Modern day celebrations include dressing up, trick or treating, carving pumpkins and bobbing for apples.

You’ll have to browse the web to search for specific information in order to find the following information. Once obtained, send it back before 31st Oct. Thus, we are starting up our first project. Enjoy surfing the net and learning English:
1.- Find out the price of Disney’s Halloween party for this year at Disney Resort Paris.
2.- Get the price and the cover (image of the film) of a famous American movie called Halloween Resurrection. There is a special offer at the moment!!!
3.-There is a radio station which broadcast typical creepy and horror songs all day long. Get the website address and 3 tittles of songs related with Halloween.
4.- Find an easy joke in English which has to do with Halloween (You can get some at a widely known "holiday spot")
5.- Embed a creepy video about some interesting Halloween scene.

We need to remove some of the splash welcoming pages by accepting terms and conditions of blogger or just letting google surpervise your content, as it is supposed to be an academic tool.
On the other hand I need you to grant me permission to manage your blogs. Just go to settings, then permissions and invite me as an author.
Finally, you just have to add your colleahue just going to the layout, adding a gadget and typing your classmates blogs addresses.
